When you have a tour in European countries, you may find that different from the new star America, European people seem not fascinated with skyscrapers. However, there are several exceptions, like Paris, London and Frankfurt am Main.

Frankfurt am Main, in English known as Frankfurt, is the business and financial centre of Germany and the largest city in the German state of Hesse, but not the capital. Unlike other German cities, Frankfurt-on-the-Main is high-rise with jagged skyscrapers from the Rhine–Main basin and alongside a restored Altstadt (Old Town).

In history, the Frankfurt area was one of the Roman settlements. Evidence can be found around a square called the Römerberg, which apparently took its name from the Romans. The region at that time was shared by the Franks which were a Germanic tribe and another tribe named the Alemanni.

In the year 800, the Frankish king Charlemagne became the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and thus Frankfurt is one of the most important cities in the empire. In 1372, Frankfurt was designated as an imperial city which is directly subject to the Holy Roman Emperor instead of a regional ruler or a local nobleman.

Commerce started to flourish in the city as early as 1150 when the Frankfurt Trade Fair came into being and Book Fair began in 1478.

With the advent of the revolution of 1848, Frankfurt was the seat of the National Assembly which was the first democratically elected German parliament. The first meeting was held in St. Paul’s Church. However, less than one year, the revolution ended up with failure.

Later, the city like other German cities, has suffered several wars, from the Thirty Years War to World War II, which nearly destroyed the outlook of the whole city.

Fortunately, after the sufferings during the wars, Frankfurt became the financial capital of Continental Europe and the transportation hub of Germany. It hosts the headquarters of the European Central Bank and the German Stock Exchange. Moreover, you can also enjoy some of the world’s most important trade shows in Frankfurt, such as the Frankfurt Auto Show and the Frankfurt Book Fair. Therefore, people label Frankfurt as “the secret capital city” of Germany

The outlook of Frankfurt today is amazing. The skyscraper skyline on the banks of the Main River has earned the city another of its many nicknames: “Manhattan”.

Inside such a cosmopolitan city, there must be an international airport. As a matter of fact, the Frankfurt am Main Airport serving the city is the largest airport in Germany, the third busiest in Europe and the ninth busiest worldwide.

By hiring car hire in Frankfurt, you'll receive a dependable vehicle from a known brand, at the right time, in the right place and at the right price. Car rental is the simplest way to indulge you inside the city and nearby cities and towns.

Car rental service is available from Holiday Autos, carhiremarket, CarDelMar, MyCarHire, AutoEurope, Opodo, CarHire3000, Expedia, arguscarhire.com, ebookers, Netflights.com and Hertz.
